It seems that this is a regression from Utopic. I just booted a Utopic USB stick, switched on the proprietary driver, and connected to my wifi network. I then performed 10 suspend/resumes in sequence (using suspend from the system menu), and they all worked flawlessly. The kern.log file was silent.
