I have a similar problem with a different scanner. The Epson GT-S80. When I choose Doublesided scanning also Invalid Argument.
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04.2LTS with the PPA running version 1.3.0 I've run a log file and attached it here below. These Entries in the log seem odd.
