While not as user friendly, interacting with OpenVPN's init script works well in that regard. One only need to enable the update-resolv-conf helper script: script-security 2 up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf That said, I don't know if the init script is still shipped in Vivid as OpenVPN now supports systemd.
