Before I get into bisection, I did another experiment. I also have a macbookpro running Ubuntu 15.04 same kernel. I plugged the printer into the macbook and it is properly recognized. I'm attaching the relevant portions of the syslog from the workstation and the macbook. They are quite a bit different.
The workstation, is the original machine that lost the printer after the upgrade.
