On further recollection (when changing my lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
file), I remembered I set the active-monitor param as a long-shot based
on bug 1426664, which did nothing.

Reporting back on #2 and #3 of Andrew's queries.

#2. When I switch VT's and then back, the background shows
#3. When disabling the image and setting a colour, it works as expected on 
initial boot.  As a side note, I have never seen a RED so eyeball burning on 
such a large surface area. 

One other thing has just clicked in my head.  I half-expected an xubuntu
splash screen to show on system boot (like on shutdown), but I don't see
that.  Instead I have a black screen on load, a 'flicker' which shows
multi-coloured lines, and then the greeter sans-background (now with
more RED).
