Thank you, Christopher Penalver, for your prompt response. I updated the BIOS from 5.16 to 5.22 as you directed via the Windows Vista partition. All aforementioned Ubuntu Linux kernels, old, new official 15.04 and upstream now boot properly on the machine [and even the Debian partition kernels] :) The BIOS update successfully worked around the kernel bug.
