I have successfully installed fonts-roboto 1:4.3-3ubuntu1.2 (and fonts- droid 1:4.3-3ubuntu1.2) from trusty-proposed. A more recent set of Roboto fonts was installed, and fontconfig behaved as expected. The bug reporter has previously (comment #12) confirmed that the change actually addresses the reported issue.
