I had a quick go at trying to reproduce that to see if I could install a modified libpam-smbpass to make the problem go away, but I was unable to reproduce it. That was probably related to these messages in my /var/log/auth.log: Jun 23 11:33:20 ubuntu vsftpd: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_smbpass.so): /lib/security/pam_smbpass.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Jun 23 11:33:20 ubuntu vsftpd: PAM adding faulty module: pam_smbpass.so as the PAM modules such as pam_smbpass.so are actually installed in /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/security/ on my 64-bit system, not /lib/security/.
