Public bug reported: Update-manager, which unaccountably appears on the screen labelled 'software updater', told me that a security update was available for the kernel (Ubuntu Security Notice USN-2667-1). When I tried to install it the progress window showed, but quickly closed without explanation.
In order to install the security update I had to do it from the command line, using dist-upgrade. In the past I have always been able to install security updates with 'software updater'.
