zcat: Driver series that NVIDIA considers legacy have received updates that allow them to compile on new kernels and to continue to work on newer X versions in the past. Driver series that were new at the time have seen new features introduced (so whereas the 7xxx drivers have no AIGLX at all the 8xxx drivers saw the start of AIGLX support). I would imagine that the 96xx series will see a similar amount of attention to 7xxx in the future but this is speculation on my part, but NVIDIA might be able to give you a more complete answer.
