I have an identical issue. Seagate FreeAgent 320GB. Can confirm that the commands
echo 1024 > /sys/block/sdb/device/max_sectors echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_disk/X:0:0:0/allow_restart work for me. (replacing X with 6 in my case). Thanks for the temp fix.
