I have a smilar case as teo1978. - I have a dell laptop with Optimus technology with both Intel and Nvidia GPU.
Before the upgrade from 331 to 340 I never managed to get the Nvidia GPU running, so I just used Intel instead. After the upgrade, the Nvidia GPU was turned on by default but something was wrong with the configuration in the xorg.conf file. Because of this I got a black screen after rebooting. The solution that I linked a few posts up actually has a thorough explanation of what happened. It shows how to fix the xorg.conf file and how to prevent ubuntu from changing it back after reboot (it was crucial for me).
