Addon to the previous comment: After restart of my system the GNOME
desktop is installed and available for use. So it seems that the
installation went well although (very) slowly.

I really wonder what the process (software center) was doing, as it
seems it was not very busy on CPU.

After the installation completed, I also checked the performance of my
internet connection, which seems OK (~10MBit/s download, 1 MBit/s
upload, 20-40 ms latency when pinging some select servers).
