If you can compile directly from svn it is already great, otherwise if you want 
to
build the debian package you can just apt-get source virtualbox, enter the 
directory
and dpkg-buildpackage it to create the binaries.

It is up to you :)

BTW did you try the Debug switch?
Build type:
  -d, --build-debug        build with debugging symbols and assertions

it is listed in configure script.
