Hi Brian,
thanks for converting your question [1] into a bug,
however, it's better to address one issue in a bug, which will make it easier
to track and fix.

So could you please change the description to what you want to report?
* If it's related to the kernel panic issue, as we're unable to reproduce that
problem here, it will be great if you can provide more debugging information
for it. I would like to suggest you to open a new bug report with the HDD that
has pre-installed Ubuntu on it.
You can boot into the previous kernel that does not have the kernel panic issue
by hitting ESC key after the Dell logo, you will see the so-called GRUB menu
after that, please select the previous kernel in "Advanced options for Ubuntu".
And file a bug with that kernel (or even run upgrade to get the latest kernel,
maybe it's already been fixed there)
* If it's related to the non-functioning touchpad, please run "apport-collect
1488672" command in the terminal to collect necessary reports for it.

Thanks!
