I have the same problem - gutsy Tribe 5 - fglrx 8.37.6...
Xorg.0.log seems to do well, it states that direct rendering is enabled:

I'm not sure but maybe but I think that it's a problem with improper glx module
loading - maybe some symlink will work - I'll try that and I'll let you know...
