I've figured out that that this problem is not from a bug. Instead, I found that the box in "Display Graphics and Objects" was not checked. The path to this is Tools/Options/OpenOffice.org Writer/View/Display/Graphics and Objects. It had been checked previously, because we had been inserting pictures into Writer documents. How it became unchecked is beyond me.
