Public bug reported:

I log into the MATE desktop. The log-in process freezes: some of the
items of the upper panel are not displayed and are replaced by red X
crosses. The turning wheel is shown on the desktop and does not
disappear. The desktop in this status is unusable.

The affected panel items in my case are:
- the shutdown icon in the upper-right corner
- icons of several programs which I attached on the upper panel: Terminal,
Synaptic, and also Updater (not sure with it).
Firefox icon is shown correctly.

A work-around to complete the log-in process is to switch to one of the
text consoles (e.g. Ctlr Alt F1) and then back to MATE desktop (Alt F7).

This buggy behaviour started after my today's system update. I was not
the case few days ago.
