I have this same problem. It has happened quite rarely before but nowadays more often and today it has happened twice. It's quite a show stopper when you have to start all the applications three times in a same workday cause there's bunch of them.
With my laptop this won't happen if you just lock it and unlock just after. Today both incidents happened after it was locked more than 30 minutes. My power settings have been set to "Don't suspend" so this shouldn't be a suspending problem. I'm using manually installed Nvidia driver (nvidia-346) and Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity Desktop.
