I can't reproduce the problem with thunar 1.6.3-1ubuntu5 on ubuntu 14.04. Does this bug still affect you, if yes can you please add the output of dpkg -s thunar? I'm able to expand the directory in the tree pane, by clicking on the little triangle symbol - on the right side, Thunar remains in the current directory.
