That doesn't seem to have worked unfortunately. Although that's
definitely the vein of the problem.

When running sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop, the
shell said I didn't have gnome 3 installed.

So I uninstalled ubuntu desktop, which went fine.

However the update still didn't work. This time the updater gave me an
error stating that ubuntu-desktop couldn't be installed. Any ideas?
