Yes, I agree with you about not giving to a novice user too much
configuration capability. In fact, Ubuntu follows this intent. But novice
users like very much desktop effects used by beryl and compiz.

So, how do you think they will react when they upgrade Ubuntu to
7.10version and find out that they can't configure anything?

Remember that they are novice users and they could not be able to know which
is the supplementary package they must download!

Also remember that they have already seen the cube, rain, expo, animations
etc effects on youtube and various pictures available over the net and are
waiting them in the next version (see forums, mailing lists, irc).

Moreover, this configuration is purely aesthetic and not functional over the
system.

Have a good luck with your next version.
(pay attention, Mr. Travis Watkins, to not lose a lot of users by your
decisions).
