Progress - using the next intel kernel works *with* nvidia installed also. ie prime-select intel | nvidia works. It hangs on shutdown, but at least I can log in now.
A 4.4.x kernel is not scheduled for inclusion in xenial is it. The 4.4.x is the only one that works for me from what I can tell.
