Thanks. I just tried a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and it reworks. It puts a driver "ati" in the device section of my xorg.conf in place of the "radeon". If I put "radeon" again, it continues to work but I lost 500FPS in glxgears.
