I finally got it to work. I've installed everything related to scim (apart from
scim_uim).
Once scim is launched (you have the icon) and if it does not work, try the
following. Open gedit and right click in the text area.
Click on "Input method" and change it to scim. Now the ctrl+space and left
click on icon should work. If it works,
try having the same setup as me.
Here is my working setup, adapt it to yours:

In ls /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/, you will notice two files (among others):
scim and scim-immodule
They are script files, in the scim file they are references to xim, and that
does not work for me.
So we want to use the scim-immodule as suggested by Ming Hua.
I've typed this in a terminal (my lang is fr_FR, adapt it with yours):
im-switch -z fr_FR -s scim-immodule
this creates a link from your home folder to the abose script, ie for me
~/.xinput.d/fr_FR -> /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim-immodule
also, my ~/.scim/global file has the following content (again, adapt):
/DefaultKeyboardLayout = French
/DisabledIMEngineFactories =
/SupportedUnicodeLocales = fr_FR.UTF-8
/DefaultConfigModule = kconfig

Reload X and see if it works. With this setup, everything works again as
before in all application (Gnome, KDE, firefox...).
