We experience the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04.3 on Intel Compute Stick (kernel 3.16.0-58). The device works without problems for a while, but after a random time (between 6-7 hours to 1-2 days) the screen freezes, but applications on the device still run.
I've submitted a bug report to Intel thinking the problem was in their driver, but now I think problem is elsewhere (since users with Nvidia experience it). If this can help, I can add that while the screen is frozen if you do the: xrandr --output HDMI1 --off and xrandr --output HDMI1 --preferred the screen start working again without reboot. Maybe the problem is in xrandr ?
