I noticed this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1517726)
from 2010. I downloaded a sample .wav file from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAV and ran this:

 sudo aplay -Dplughw:0,0 -fcd Downloads/sample.wav

It works! I can change the -Dplughw argument and play on both my
motherboards rear output and through the USB stick. So there's something
being lost in how pulseaudio interacts with this, I think.
