Looks like the culprit is line 37 of debian/rules, in the 
override_dh_auto_install block:
        rm -rf debian/python3-pytest/usr/lib/python3.5

Barry, is this due to Debian supporting multiple versions of Python 3?
Is there a less hacky way to do this so that it builds in the Python
3.5-only Ubuntu Xenial as well?
