Thanks for your bugreport.
This problem got fixed in the 0.78 version of the release-upgrader. Sorry for
the trouble.
Please run:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
to recover.
