Crude, crude workaround on trusty:

    aptitude markauto '?name(linux-image-.*-generic)'

This lets 'apt-get autoremove' clean out old kernels installed via
update-manager, while /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01autoremove-kernels ensures
that some kernels are retained.
