Hm.  There was a problem with an earlier version when Xgl would be
loaded before 3d acceleration was set up - your problem may be this.  On
the other hand, the fglrx drivers have very bad performance when using
Xgl and not using a compositing window manager (such as Compiz).

If you don't want to use Compiz (or the compositing features of Kwin, I
suppose), then Xgl is probably not very useful for you.

Can you attach the output of running "ls -lah /etc/X11/Xsession.d"?
