Bizarrely, no problems as reported above with Chromium Version 48.0.2564.116 running on Toshiba Satellite C660 i386 32-bit laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 (actually 14.04.4), but I am getting this ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR problem with Chrome Version 42.0.2311.90! No problems with Firefox.
Chrome was installed from an old .deb on the hard disk.
