Paul, kubuntu-desktop only recomends strigi related stuff, so you can easily/safely un-install. (see above: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/strigi/+bug/128876/comments/10 and http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/metapackages/kubuntu-desktop)
The Right Thing™ would be to try and fix this bug, instead of sweeping the problem under the rug. It would be a shame if kubuntu cant ship with desktop search. For me this is a showstopper of a bug.
