I have the same experience on a machine I administer remotely; the initial installation of gutsy beta was just fine, but after a update package update was performed yesterday, the same low resolution occurred. And sure, setting hz and vr manually fixes the issue.
Btw, and xorg has never been able to autodetect the correct HorisZync or VertRefresh values of the CRT. I noticed that there was nine copys of xorg.conf each with some variation on content, though none of them seems contain the original xorg.conf i edited after installation.
