Probably of little use, but I thought I'd report what I think is a similar problem I encountered when upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy. The Feisty was a fresh install, only updated.
The dist. upgrade GUI terminated while installing the Gutsy packages. In a terminal I ran apt-get update and upgrade. The output is attached. I am fairly certain everything was corrected by wolfe99's suggestion.
