Comment by the author of the bug report: Today, 6/4/16. Upon ubuntu's notice of Linux Kernel 4.4.0-17 availability, I proceeded immediately to upgrade xenial. On restarting the computer the built-in sound device went anew mute. I do not know enough about the workings of alsa to give good advice, but I suspect the problem may lie with the kernel.
