I have a very similar problem. I got a wlan card with rtl8180L chipset.
If I try to get an IP via DHCP, the system freezes and the numlock and
capslock leds start to blink. I am using ubuntu gutsy.

I can do some things with the card. It is possible to scan for cells,
and it does find some. It is also possible to assignt an access point to
the card. I can set a wep key. If I try to get an IP from my router via
DHCP, everything freezes.

Cheers,
Holger Stephan
