I went back to re-install, so I could give you the details - the LSPCI is
included below:

1) I insert the CD and start-up - I am using the Dell LCD named in the bug;
2) I get the usual Ubuntu logo and graphics and the cursor turns to an X -
white outline against a black backdrop
3) It's thinking for a while ....
4) Then I get the dialog "System runs in a graphical failsafe mode" - with
buttons to Continue or Configure (I spent a lot of time in Configure yesterday,
but to no avail.)
5) Clicking on Continue, I get the Screen/Graphics Card dialog with model =
Plug 'n Plan and Resolution = 800x600
6) Without changing any options, I click on OK ......
7) It's thinking for another while ...
8) The orange / brown / sandy colored screen appears
9) The desktop is drawn correctly - in Big FONT (so big, that not all the
menubar items fit) - with the Examples folder and the Install icon on the
desktop
10) I click on the Install icon (actually, I double-click on the Install icon
and the first page of the Install process appears - it is TOO BIG to fit on the
screen, so I move it around with ALT-CLICK to find the Forward button. ***
NOTE: Clicking on the FORWARD button, which is correctly enabled, in the
install process does not always "work" - sometimes, I have to first click on
the dialog box title bar, seemingly to activate the window, before I can click
on the FORWARD button and have it actually work;
11) Now I'm looking at the map / timezone - click on FORWARD again (here I need
to first click on the title bar, then click on the FORWARD button to make it
work)
12) Click on FORWARD to select English keyboard layout;
13) In the "Prepare Disk Space" dialog, I click on Guided - use entire disk,
adn then click FORWARD;
14) That starts up the PARTITIONER
15) A dialog appears, asking for my name, password, computer name etc....
16) The next dialog says "READY TO INSTALL"
17) I click on INSTALL and away we go, for the "Partitions formatting"

Takes a while for the install

Once the disk is formatted and all the softwer is installed, I get to the
window with the title "Installation Complete", and click on the RESTART NOW
button

I press the physical button on the face of the computer / CD tray to
eject the install CD

I get a long list of SQUASHFS errors that trail past on the console so
fast I cannot read them.

The Ubuntu logo on the screen and a small square of orange at the far
right end of the progress indicator. I press ENTER to proceed and the
system restarts.

The Ubuntu sign-on appears and I log in with my name and password.

The desktop appears with APPLICATIONS, PLACES and SYSTEM in the menubar,
The restricted drivers dialog appears - at least I think it was the
restricted drivers little yellow pop-up helper - but soon disappears as
more (OVERSIZED) tiny icons are stuffed into the menubar.

I move the mouse over the green restricted drivers icon at the top of
the screen, in the right half of the menu. It says RESTRICTED DRIVERS
AVAILABLE (I'm paraphrasing)

It asks for my admin password and then gives me the Restricted Drivers
dialog, with the heading "No proprietary driers are in use on this
system. There is a driver in the lower half - "ATI accelerated graphics
driver" - there is no check in the Enabled box, and there is a red dot
and text that says "Not in use" for status.

I click on enable.

I get a dialog with a Red circle and a white bar - with text: "The
software source for the package xorg-driver-fglrx is not enabled."

I click on close.

I open the Synaptic Pkg Manager, and click on Repositories menuitem; I
click on the "Third Party" tab, and there are two options - for gutsy
partner and guts partner (Source Code)

Yesterday, I click on just the first one - this time I click to enable
both.

Closing out of that brings me back to the "restricted drivers" window, and I
click to enable the driver - clicking on the ENABLE DRIVER button in the dialog
that asks
"Enable the Driver?
ATI accelerated graphics driver.

It now downloads three files. (It would have been MUCH nicer if I didnt'
have to go through the Synaptic Pkg Manager step - and it just "did it"
for me. I'm pretty novice - but most people/first time Ubuntu-ists, I
bet, who are real novices would totally be stumped on that.)

The next dialog says "Changes applied - successfully applied all
changes". I close that.

The dialog beneath shows that the accelerated driver is installed, but
"Needs computer restart" is the status.

I click on the notification itcone - there are four updates for
• libparted
• parted
• update-manager
• update-manager-core

I click to INSTALL updates. IT APPLIES the changes. INSTALLING SOFTWARE.
Update is complete. Click on CLOSE button.

the Dialog says "Your system is up-to-date", so I click on CLOSE.

I'm not back at the RESTRICTED DRIVERS WINDOW, and the headline text
says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" so I close that
dialog, and then click on the "power" button to RESTART.

Here's the moment of truth.

GRUB Loading
Starting Up
The Ubuntu logo appears
The console briefly flashes by, twice before I get the dialog

"System runs in a graphical failsafe mode", with two buttons to CONTINUE
or CONFIGURE.

The screen is not recognized and the default model it is trying is "Plug
'n Play".
