@Jonathan: I was on 15.10. :| The problem with 15.10 is the trackpad doesn't work due to a bug in the i2c driver (drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-designware-platdrv.c) for kernels < 4.5. When I upgraded my kernel to version 4.5 I started getting this same external monitor issue.
