I have found that the Thai characters come up on my desktop but not on my laptop.
This must be related to my laptops DVD player, but as I have already shown the Thai characters in the file names show up on this DVD player in windows xp using VMware. This means that my laptop's DVD player on Ubuntu must not support reading non-english characters correctly.
