Smacked against the same problem on the Qosmio G20. Gutsy Beta 1 will not recognize the hard drives out of the box.
I managed to get it to recognize the hard drives as follows: Press F6 on the Grub menu while over the first menu option (Other Options): Append the following options to the boot line and then boot (Enter): blacklist=piix,ata_piix This enabled me to have the drives recognized properly. I'm moving on to the Install.
