I have a similar issue on xubuntu 16.04 whenever I lock the screen or suspend the monitor. When I log back in the mouse cursor is missing. However, when I hit alt-tab to switch applications, the mouse reappears! I am not sure why this works, but it does for me. Can anyone else confirm if this works for them? The tty switch (with ctrl-alt-f2 and ctrl-alt-f7) mentioned in other comments works for me as well.
