[Toshiba U200, intel gma 945, kubuntu gutsy up-to-date] I get the issue (dark screen with grey squares) on my kubuntu gutsy (new install), as i did in feisty. And I get more often this issue than in feisty (see last paragraph for explanation...) ! Notice that one time I got the same issue with ctrl-alt-bksp trying to restart my X server.
I agree that in feisty, i disabled splash (removing splash from grub) and it worked better, but the issue happened from time to time anyways.
