In fact there are two control panels:

gdmsetup = Login Window
gnome-sound-properties = Sound

Both allow to adjust the sounds. However, they are not synchroized and
they do not update gdm.conf in a consistent way.

Using gdmsetup I get the logon sound but no sound for the ready prompt (used to
be question.wav)
Setting logon sound in both applets, I get the logon sound twice.
Turning sound of in gdmsetup turns of logon sound all together.

A synchronous behaviour would be required.

Btw. There is no logoff sound available on my test machine. 7.04 played
logout.wav beautifully.
