Thanks for following up on this old bug...

I should have put this as the first line in my original post, since it
addresses the common assumption.

** This bug is NOT about touchpad-scrolling!! **

I don't mind having touchpad scrolling on, but I want my physical,
hardware, scroll-wheel to work, just like it did on much older
distributions. This is a blue wheel/button between the right and left
mouse click buttons under my laptop's touchpad.  There are physical
hardware events that are not being seen at all.  They should be
available, for instance as button 4/5 events or whatever, from the
driver.

I having been using Gutsy for months. This bug is still present.
