Thank you for finding the root problem :-) I think we need to figure out how to delegate handling of XAUTHORITY to to the x11 interface so that it can be handled without special-casing anything in snap-confine. If the x11 interface could define environment variables (and it will be able soon) we would only have to figure out where to put/copy the .Xauthority file and how to keep it up-to-date as session change.
