This is happening to me in the Lubuntu 16.04 install.

I'm installing from a USB stick. It's a 2008 Macbook with an aftermarket
SSD that was wiped - not even a partition table. The "erase disk and
install ubuntu" installation method gets all the way past partitioning
and copying files, then fails with "unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda"
as the dialog title, text is "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed.
This is a fatal error."

When running 'sudo grub-install /dev/sda' from a terminal window, the
error is thus:

    Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: error: failed to get canonical path of `/cow'.

To add insult to injury, the following dialog is broken; see #1608006.

I haven't successfully gotten grub installed yet.
