Public bug reported: Running clean install of 16.4.1 as a VMware Workstation 12 Pro guest. Install open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-desktop. You get a full scope of display resolution options and the automatic guest resolution resize functionality.
If you switch to linux-virtual, there by removing the linux-image-extra packages, you lose the the automatic resize and are limited to 6 resolutions of 1176x885 or lower. This suggests that either open-vm-tools-desktop should have a linux- image-extra dependancy OR the dependent modules needs to be moved into the main kernel. lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Release: 16.04 $ apt-cache policy open-vm-tools-desktop open-vm-tools-desktop: Installed: 2:10.0.7-3227872-2ubuntu1 Candidate: 2:10.0.7-3227872-2ubuntu1 Version table: *** 2:10.0.7-3227872-2ubuntu1 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: open-vm-tools-desktop 2:10.0.7-3227872-2ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-31.50-generic 4.4.13 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-31-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.1 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Sat Jul 30 11:59:16 2016 InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-07-30 (0 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS "Xenial Xerus" - Release amd64 (20160420.1) SourcePackage: open-vm-tools UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug xenial -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1608085 Title: automatic display resize and resolution choices depends on linux- image-extra To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1608085/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
