It's pretty similar. For Ubuntu, you just file a bug against the
package, upload or link to the files that need sponsoring and subscribe
ubuntu-sponsors. If it's a new upstream version, tag it upgrade-
software-version.

You should also try to follow Ubuntu's release cycle. Freeze exceptions
are possible though if you can justify them to the release team's
satisfaction.
