Using a CanoScan LiDE 20, I have a similar problem. Often immediately before or immediately after scanning (via scanimage, not Xsane), the slider freezes making horrible loud noises, not unlike what Antti Miranto describes. Downgrading libsane to 1.0.15-9 appears to solve it too.
